As a collector I am naturally drawn to work reminiscent of the mid century modern era. I find the blocks of color, defining structures and overall simplicity of that era comforting. As a curator, I never limit myself to the types of work I want to feature and exhibit. However, a cross over of my personal esthetic and professional objectivity is bound to happen during the selection process from to time; and when it does, it seems to fit just right in every way.
My selection today is an example of one of my contemporary cross overs. The tonal qualities and linear composition pulls me in as a viewer, but the stark imagery and artistic perspective feels pertinent to the exhibition concept.
TRANQUILIDAD II, SEVILLA was taken in 2019 by New York based photographer Erin Karp. The view from her window while on a stay over in Sevilla, Spain was full of shapes, colors and artistic inspiration. In a statement about her work, she described finding tranquility amongst the monotony and repetition in the surrounding rooftops.
Though taken prior to the pandemic, this piece is a discerning representation of a world at a stand still.
