BETWEEN BOOMER AND MILLENNIAL

Like most 40 year old’s who were born and raised in the U.S., I fall in between boomer and millennial on the generation spectrum. I did not live through any war time crisis such as WWII, Vietnam or the Civil Rights Movement. The significant and era defining moments in my life were all based around technological advancements, social acceptance and economic growth (for the most part). In all, my generation has not yet experienced a global disaster, until now.

I realize how fortunate and unique my life experience has been so far. For those born in war torn countries, they have found a way to live in spite of turmoil. The work I selected is from Sri Lankan born artist Kushlani Jayasinha. She witnessed suffering, war and poverty on a level very few of us could imagine. Her personal journey led her to eventually relocate to the U.S., receive a doctorate, raise a family and begin painting.

My selection today was more about perspective. For some, this is our first real world crisis, for many others, they have been a witness to chaos their whole life. That does not diminish our current individual struggles, I believe it shows us that we can endure and overcome.

FOLDS OF TIME  is an abstract form Kushlani’s DREAMSCAPES series. With FOLDS OF TIME, she convincingly captures a dream in progress; leaving a block of color below as a weight or anchor for the fleeting scene above. The greater aesthetic of this piece is the representation of realized dreams by those who has lived through struggle (as we are now).
