ATTRACTION AND WARNING

Ann Is Safer at Home.jpg

Staying inside allows time to let the mind wander, my thoughts have been on how much I miss my family. Which of course leads me down a nostalgic path, remembering my time spent alone as a child with only my dolls to keep me company. Though spending time alone now has a vastly different connotation, I was immediately taken back to my childhood when I first viewed my selection for the day.

ANN IS SAFER AT HOME by LA based artist and photographer Janet Milhomme feels confrontational and comforting at the time to me as a viewer. The bright red background is both an attraction and warning. The Raggedy Ann doll may be the subject; but the demanded restriction of an already inanimate object is whats symbolic here. We as a people have been asked to take shelter and isolate; do not move, do not play, just be; it’s for our own good and the safety of our communities.

Janet’s ability to find the universally relatable qualities in unexpected subjects is part of what defines her as an artist. This piece was a standout from much of the photography I’ve received in relation to the project mission.
