COVID ERA COGNATE COUSIN

I’ve always had an innate affinity for the POP genre. It’s easily distinguishable characteristics, nostalgic references, use of color and cultural commentary resinate with me. Maybe it’s generational, but exposure to POP greats like Oldenburg, Haring and Warhol at a young age left a lasting imprint. My own artistic endeavors were always derivative of POP, as a curator the style is usually the first to catch my eye.

My selection today was an immediate stand out amongst the days entries. With its bright yellow background and comic lined figure, LINDA NO.1 feels like a COVID era cognate cousin of Lichtenstein’s “Drowning Girl”. Created by London based artist Emma Coyle; LINDA NO.1 has an upbeat and optimistic tone; a dissimilar and welcomed piece of artwork during this time.

The figure is disheveled and relaxed; seemingly with no where in particular to be. She has my attention and I catch my self wishing that my own quarantine experience was this alluring.

On a more visceral level, I was reminded how art universally connects humanity. A world a way, Emma Coyle’s own life experiences led her down an artistic path with attributes not much different than my own. Looking at her work I find myself inspired again, demonstrating the power and influence of art.
