Dab Art is pleased to present MEZZANINE, a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Zara Monet Feeney.
Pieces like GREENROOM and MEZZANINE blur the lines between gender and figurative identity. Though ribbons of saturated yellow and metallic silver explicitly frame the subjects in of each these works, the layers of shapes and textures keep the eyes and interest in a constant state of motion. More realistic human flesh is the focus of Feeney in ACT 1 and ACT 2. Despite the exposed skin, gender identities are once again clouded as the figure’s faces are hidden beneath a brilliant head of hair. In Zara’s work, layers of bold colors form body parts and shapes that confound the distinction between organic and inorganic.
Zara’s canvas size ranges from the minuscule to the monumental. The unique sizes play with the viewers senses, enveloping the spectator’s attention and filling their peripheral vision. The surfaces of the canvas are heavily worked. The medium of paint and multitude of colors create a luscious and visceral surface.
Zara Monet Feeney (b. 1988) Zara was born and raised in Thousand Oaks, California; receiving her BA at UCLA and MFA at LCAD. Zara’s framework on how to conceptually investigate ideas in painting is explored through her studies. By challenging traditional modes of representation and exploiting optics of value and color, she questions the common way art is received. Zara works from her studio located at H Gallery + Studios in Midtown Ventura.
