In the digital age, influence, information and creative achievements are fleeting. The cultural climate evolves and changes with every new trend or challenge. While social media has propelled a new generation of entertainers into the spotlight, there are still a select few who’s talent and resilience are unparalleled and unstoppable. The odyssey from Beyonce’s humble Houston roots to American Royalty was not ventured on talent alone. While music was the catalyst for fame; Beyonce’s vigorous work ethic and perilous ventures into acting, fashion, philanthropy and fine art have solidified her status as a cultural icon. With the release of Renaissance in June, Beyonce once again reminds us that only the iconic will survive.
In the early 2000’s the future Queen Bey was breaking away from the immensely successful girl group Destiny’s Child to embark on a solo career. The cover image for her record Dangerously In Love has become one of the most visually recognized album covers of all time. Markus Klinko’s creative vision and imitable photographic artistry was the incantation behind the famous cover. At the time Klinko captured Beyonce’s independence and musical freedom; in retrospect his artistic interpretation has become synonymous with a pop culture icon who has embodied success and continues to reshape the world as she sees fit.
Markus Klinko’s ability to shoot past the surface bridges the gap between standard portraiture and fine art. While the subjects are often celebrated talent, it is Klinko’s distinctive approach and exceptional aptitude behind the camera that is responsible for some of the most quintessential images of the past three decades.
Klinko has photographed the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Anne Hathaway, Kate Winslet, Will Smith, Eva Mendes, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, and Iman. His editorial clients include Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar, and Interview magazine. Brands such as Lancôme, L'Oréal Paris, Nike, Hugo Boss, Anna Sui, Pepsi, Skyy Vodka, and Remy Martin have hired Klinko to create advertising campaigns. His campaign for Keep A Child Alive raised over one million dollars for children with AIDS in just 3 days.
Born in Switzerland of French, Italian, Jewish, and Hungarian descent, Klinko spent his early years training to become a classical harp soloist. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. Later, Klinko signed an exclusive recording contract with EMI Classics, as well as a management contract with Columbia Artists Management. He received the Grand Prix de Disque for his recording of French harp music, with members of the orchestra of the Paris Opera Bastille. Klinko performed in recitals and as a featured soloist with symphony orchestras around the world. He was also regularly featured in such publications as Vogue Italia, Vanity Fair, GQ, The New York Times, Madame Figaro, Stereo Review, and Ongaku no Tomo.
