Remembering past events is a process of reconstructing what may have happened based on the details the brain could successfully store and recall. As each day goes by more information is added to our memory. While we add more information into the filing cabinet inside our head things get forgotten, distorted, and some stick out more than others. When I take my own experiences and my own stored memories and try to translate them onto a 2 dimensional surface the result is a conglomeration of experiences that may or may not be distinguished from the next. Using a layering technique with InkAid transfers I layered different organic forms together in a larger composition. I’ve transformed such images to draw attention to what is stored in our memory and how each image, big or small, has a larger impact on our perception. These works require the viewer to closely look at the images layered together and consider how we remember different parts of life, celebrating of our filed away memories.

During multiple trips to Japan between 2005 and 2012, I photographed different locations in Kyoto, Tokyo and Nagoya. 

I am currently working on a sci-fi project involving a robot custom built for this new series.

Juan Miguel Marin (Quito, Ecuador, 1980) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose sphere of work and influence bleeds across visual art and design, music, and filmmaking. Marin’s “Drawing Under the Influence” in fine art drawing offers a study in a meditative process of sentient creation, each piece representing part of the artist’s past or envisioned future. Working in ink and archival paper, Marin’s intricate designs explore the tension between organic shapes and textures and structured lines and monochromatic, clean composition. Just as a viewer may see a skein of yarn, a fiber of muscle or a mollusk shell, Marin’s process is equally subjective, the beginning and end of each piece following a process of internal thought and resolution.  

My work is about my lifelong passion for and connection to nature. To convey the sense of mystery I find hidden there, I use it’s colors, shapes, textures, and shadows as elements in my paintings. 

Although seemingly chaotic, nature has its own structure. My response to nature’s movement and energy as well as its structure is what connects and grounds me.

In the process of creating these artworks I recapture my original response to all that my world has to offer visually as well as emotionally. It is this wonder and beauty I want the viewer to see.

I believe my work is successful in proportion to my courage and honesty. In these recent works, intent is married with spontaneity and it is important to me that the energy that I feel while I create art is evident in the final piece. The result of the unexpected variations invites the viewer to experience the variable nature of my painting process. I also hope to offer the opportunity to use one's own imagination while experiencing these pieces. My process and materials are my motivation but I also succumb to the thought that I am but a vessel trough which creativity flows; putting down on the canvas the images that exist in the universe but and have yet to be physically realized.

Robin worked as an interior designer and at a museum in Los Angeles, working on exhibitions and administration before she decided to pursue her art full-time. She was introduced to encaustic painting while living in Austin and paints almost exclusively in encaustic. The infinite potential of encaustic medium offers so many wonderful challenges and opportunities. She loves the organic feel and the unique translucent properties.
Robin’s work has been selected for museum shows, many select juried exhibitions, solo and group shows, has appeared in print publications and is in private collections nationwide. 

She is active in the arts community; teaching encaustic workshops, promoting art and artists through her volunteering in several art associations in the southern California area.
