My new body of work are abstracts. I’m using cold wax medium mixed with oil paint for the paintings. Also, incorporated into the work is graphite, oil pastels, oil sticks and anything else I can find to make interesting marks. The pieces are spontaneous and intuitive. I start with no plan just mark making and playing with the color. I let the piece take me on the journey. Many layers are built. The wax allows for carving and scrapping that create wonderful texture. Whatever came before leaves it’s influence on the top surface. Some new tools for painting are knives, spatulas, rollers, old credit cards, anything that will add and remove layers. Beautiful and unique color blends are created as paint is added or taken away. Wonderful surprises occur that could never be planned. There is a transparency and patina to the color that is singular to the cold wax medium. Collage may be incorporated as the wax will seal over paper, fabrics or other items. My one goal for each piece is that it will stand from any direction. There is no correct top or bottom and it may be hung any way. This new work is very different from my previous. My old style was representational and figurative pieces reflecting the natural world. As the years passed, I did less rendering and more suggesting, turning to the palette knife more. This must have led to the abstracts! Because it seems that they just happened! I’m enjoying my new work so much and feel I’m experiencing the true “creative process” where the joy of freedom, experimentation, and surprise prevail.
