Dab Art Co. is pleased to present DUNE, a solo exhibition of works by Marek Boguszak. View the online exclusive DUNE in its entirety on our collectors platform ARTSY (Aug 1 - Nov 1, 2022).

Czech-born Marek Boguszak is a photographer based in Prague. After graduation in mathematics, Marek completed his PhD in sociology. He was greatly influenced by the aesthetics of Josef Sudek, Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz as well as by his training and work in mathematics studying abstract models of various phenomena. His body of work is an exploration of abstractions in landscape and classic photography representation.

In thirty-five years, Marek has established himself by recalling experimental methods of the early Avant-garde. From analog to digital, Marek developed his visual vocabulary by working with sophisticated processing and printing techniques, both analogue using silver gelatin and digital under glass. Since 2019, his focus has been on creating a significant series of sand dunes photography, presenting colorful dreamscapes with new meanings.

He has presented solo exhibitions at international venues including Galerie am Lindenhof and Curator’s Lab, Zurich (CH), Galerie u Zlateho Kohouta, Prague (CZ), Fitzrovia Gallery, London (UK) and San Quirico d'Orcia (IT). He has received many awards and honorable mentions with TIFA, APA, IPA, Px3, ND Awards, FAPA.

Shooting digital color photography of deserts and sand dunes has brought me to a world of magnanimous and dignified calmness. In the motionless and quiet sand vastness with nothing else but sky where only the movement of the sun reminds you that the time has not stopped, your eyes are hardly distracted by other senses and you sink into another dimension. All the space around you is unified by the natural elegance of the lines and shapes of dunes which are endlessly intertwined in uncountable varieties of combinations traced by sunlight and shadows.

By contrast, the post-processing work is a thrill. Exploring color tonalities of light spectrum which are hidden to human eyes in deserts, reveals what sunlight has painted on the canvas of sand dunes. Unseen color combinations move the image towards ‘abstract’ and make it ready to further processing while respecting the original data matrix.

Due to the maintenance of the ‘logic’ of the raw data, it is up to the viewer to decide what they choose to see. They know of course, rationally, they are looking at a photography of sand dunes, however, what they see may remind them of different objects and evoke a various emotions and ideas fully disconnected from the original photography.

As the recognizable world ... or only as a feeling.

Your thoughts can freely swing between reality and created illusion and in the dialogue you can choose your own perspective.

-Marek Boguszak
