EXHIBITION

Pleased to present HARE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW, a solo exhibition of work by Bob Freyer. View HARE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW in it’s entirety on our collectors platform ARTSY (March 25 - June 25, 2023).

Although inspired by the works of the classic POP Art movement masters, Bob Freyer is in a class of his own making. This Pittsburg born family man revels in the pop genre, pulling influence from his 80’s and 90’s kid nostalgia such as Saturday morning cartoons, BMX, Hip Hop and skateboarding.

Similar to the street art styles of the early 80’s, Freyer uses a variety of mediums; Spray Paint, Oils, Charcoal and Inks are used to create a genetic code of dramatic art. Consistent tension between self expression and spontaneous gesture are coherent throughout this body of work. Freyer’s ability to combine vivid color and personal commentary is a testament to his controlled chaos style of painting.

The recurring character in HARE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW is Freyer’s Blue Bunny. Strategically placed in each composition, the Blue Bunny acts as a kind of sentimental yet savage docent, present to guide the viewer through the emotions, memories and traumas of the artist. The Blue Bunny is a Saturday Morning incarnation of Freyers’ life experiences and observations.

Bob Freyer is an American award winning artist from Pittsburgh Pa. Born in 1980 and living in a small town of North Huntingdon he gravitated to cartoons, action figures, and using his imagination. While growing up in the 80s and 90s he used his imagination to draw things as he saw them. Drawing his figures differently than they were or how he would like them, or drawing weird creatures that appeared out his window at night. Even to this day he’s still drawing creatures that don’t exist.

His artistic influence started young. The beginning of what is now, it started with watching Bob Ross. In the later years he fell in love with Hip Hop, basketball, BMX, and skateboarding. Hip Hop is a big part of his life, while listening to music he pictured snapshots of art associated with the music. This led to a love for graffiti and the freedom of the graffiti culture. Finding more artists to be inspired from that were untraditional and the artists themselves were misfits.

After finding what he seemed to be his purpose he attended school in 1999 for art. From there he learned more techniques to sharpen his skills while drawing and painting. After creating a piece of Hitler getting assassinated by the Grim Reaper the instructor refused to show his piece in an art show. Hearing this caused some issues with Mr. Freyer and his instructor, and after a few words being said Mr. Freyer left.

In 2006 Bob's father passed away. This lead to years of being angry and depressed. With this happening he put the paints and pens down for a bit. It took till 2013 to start it up once again. After watching a tv show about pumpkin carving with his then wife, he explained that he used to do paint and draw. To prove her wrong he went out and got some supplies and drew a self portrait and the Grinch.

Since 2013 after picking up the art supplies it has lead to him creating almost everyday since. From 2013 to around 2016 he was creating pop art. Using mainly spray paint and stencils. Painting in style gave him many opportunities to in showing his work and gaining a following on social media. He’s since moved on to creating original artwork and using different mediums. Like acrylics, oils, oil pastels, spray paint, oil pigments, inks and other materials that he can incorporate to his paintings.

Since he’s picked up the paint brushes in 2013 Bob has painted hundreds of pieces. His collectors range from everyday people to gallery owners to celebrities. Mr. Freyer has gotten his work in the homes of KRS One, Rakim, Mr. Dibbs, Gregory Siff, Murs, Theo Rossi, graffiti legend Adam COST, DJ Abilities, poet Shihan, Talib Kweli, Jeremy Fish and others.

His works now consist of memories of his childhood. Finding the moments that are hidden by adulthood. He like to explore his insecurities he had as a child and as an adult apply them to his subjects. Having two young kids is something that inspires Mr. Freyer. He watches how they interact and finds glimpse of himself as a kid. Bob loves to paint with his kids, and they have taught him just to have fun and enjoy it. This has resulted in him taking a new approach to art and painting for himself. It’s not for the likes on social media, it’s all about his release he gets through his art.

Looking through his catalog of work, you’ll see how he pokes fun at himself. You’ll also see he likes to play with words and pop art. There’s also an obsession with painting bunnies.

Bob Freyer is an artist that paints for himself. His paintings are how he sees the world through his eyes. His artwork is his words, his memories his thoughts, parts of his souls, and his secrets.
