GINA M.
Gina M. hails from a funky and creative family. In the 70’s her parents owned a puppet theater in California where weekends were spent developing shows, building puppets, and hosting birthday parties. Her anthropomorphic tendencies began early reared by puppets and their puppeteers. These unique life-events mix with her emotional observations informing her art, recording the significance of memory and mortality, while uncovering a hidden narrative through the healing practice of art making.
Her work possesses a surface innocence, a non-threatening nature and whimsy, drawing the viewer in, whereby a deeper or darker meaning or message emerges. Using iconic images from childhood in her art, Gina M explores the lingering emotional residue of childhood and creates 3d narratives as a point of release and personal development.
Gina is also a member of Los Angeles Art Association and Pasadena Society Of Artists, currently lives in Southern California where she has her studio.
ARTIST STATEMENT
In all her work there is a whimsy with a dark side. Raised in California by a funky and creative family, artist Gina M. spent her youth behind the stage at the family puppet theater developing shows, building puppets and hosting other children's birthday parties. This bigtop atmosphere playes a part in the melancholy narrative seen in her work today with the distressed bears, toys, and puppets, used to express her inner emotional life.
Her work is exhibited throughout California. In October 2017, Gallery 825 hosted Gina M’s toy circus themed solo show ‘Midway’. Her ceramic and assemblage pieces also received honorable mentions at the Ink&Clay 42 exhibit and TAG gallery at the 2018 LA OPEN and El Camino college art gallery requested her work for inclusion in two group shows, Personal Matters, and Mother and child.
Gina M’s eclectic educational background influences all of her art making.
In college she studied interior design and color theory at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising while attending workshops in painted trompe l'oeil, faux finish, and decorative wall treatments.
