ARTIST STATEMENT

I am interested in the negotiation between material and subject matter as it pertains to ideas of gender, culture and class. My work often incorporates materials that are easily found and often associated with folkloric arts or craft contrasted with ideas of classic western art iconography. Having been surrounded by traditional feminine role models, scale plays an integral role in delivering intimacy, similar to the feeling of seeing women mend clothes for their family. I am interested in making art that is conscious of its existence as an art object rather than as an object with a utilitarian purpose. The assemblages I create are often grounded in the decorative arts that historically have been associated with domesticity and virtue. In my work, I seek to challenge the viewer to think of what they are seeing and question their notions of the materials used and the scale it is referencing.

Devin Chicas

Devin Chicas is a Los Angeles native who embodies the spirit of being the "jack of all trades" and received her BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. During her time as an undergrad, she worked on collaborative stop-motion projects and spent much of her time studying traditional methods of printmaking. She pursued her MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her work incorporates various forms of art making that include but are not limited to sculpture, photography, printmaking, animation, graphic design and painting.

Most recently, Devin has been working on bodies of work that deal with perceptions of gender, fertility/infertility, deformities, abnormalities and sex with a focus on confronting the Latin American Male gaze. Through the use of various mediums she plays with scale, material and placement to make the viewer challenge their ideas of femininity and domesticity.

Her interest in art and culture have lead her to travel to many places abroad. During her visits to France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium she became very interested in the contrast between art history in Western Europe and Latin America. Being of Latin American parentage herself, her work tries to bridge the gap between traditional art making forms and folkloric arts that historically have been associated with primitive civilizations. With these ideas in mind, she tries to create works in which the hand of the artist is present and perfection is unimportant.
