EXHIBITION

We are pleased to present "A Rapa": An online exclusive Solo Exhibition of extraordinary drawings by Queer Xicano artist Abel Rodriguez. The exhibition showcases a captivating series of mixed-media drawings, encompassing self-portraits and portraits of his partner and friends. "A Rapa," which translates to "shaved hair," delves into the societal preconceptions and stereotypes surrounding one's character based solely on hairstyle, while concurrently reflecting on the aging queer body in a world that often prioritizes aesthetics, vanity, and masculinity.

Born in Fairfield, CA in 1979, Abel Rodriguez is a remarkable artist whose creative journey has been shaped by diverse experiences and an exploration of multiple realities. He received his MFA degree in Painting from the esteemed Yale School of Art in 2010, and prior to that, he obtained a BFA in Drawing and Painting, as well as Graphic Design from California State University, Long Beach in 2007. Rodriguez's talent and unique perspective led him to be selected for the prestigious Artist in Residence Program at Recology, San Francisco in 2011. From 2015 to 2022, he co-owned El Comalito Collective in Vallejo, CA, a visionary space dedicated to fostering opportunities and building support networks for marginalized voices. Currently residing and working in Vallejo, CA, Rodriguez's artistic prowess has garnered nationwide recognition through his exhibitions across the country.

"A Rapa" delves into the complexities of identity and societal expectations, specifically focusing on the significance of hairstyle as a symbol of rebellion and resilience. Rodriguez's personal journey as a queer individual, navigating the intersections of multiple realities, has deeply influenced this ongoing series of drawings. The act of shaving one's head, which represented rebellion and "hardness" in the context of his upbringing as an ex-pelon (gang member), challenges traditional norms while signifying economic instability. Additionally, the drawings explore the longing for touch and intimacy within a space that restricts physical engagement between men, except in moments of violence.

These compelling drawings are imbued with profound symbolism and offer a poignant narrative for brown queer men living in challenging environments. They represent a visual testimony to the resilience and strength found within the intersections of identity, socioeconomic backgrounds, and queer experiences. Through his art, Rodriguez invites viewers to contemplate the complex layers of humanity and challenge societal preconceptions.

We invite art enthusiasts, collectors, and the general public to experience the evocative world of "A Rapa" by Abel Rodriguez. This online exclusive solo exhibition offers a rare opportunity to witness the artist's profound exploration of identity, rebellion, and intimacy.

Private viewing rooms, artwork details and and collector acquisitions are available on ARTSY.
